Fried Masala Idly

Long back, we tasted this Idly in one of the famous restaurants in Pondicherry. We all loved it and I really wanted to make it at home. My sister helped me with this recipe at first but later I made few changes to her version and finally got this much yummy Fried Masala Idlies. This is much similar to chilly paratha. You can either use freshly prepared idlies or leftover idlies.

Ingredients :

1. Idly - 10 (Cut them in to pieces)
2. Maida / All purpose flour - 1/2 Cup
3. Corn Flour - 1/2 Cup
4. Red Chilly Powder - 3 tsp or adjust to your taste
5. Soya Sauce - 1 tsp
6. Tomato Puree - 1 Cup
7. Ginger - Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
8. Onion - 1/2 Cup (Finely Chopped)
9. Bell Pepper - 1/4 Cup (Finely Chopped)
10. Coriander - 1/4 Cup (Finely Chopped)
11. Lemon Juice - 1 tsp
12. Garam Masala - 1 tsp
13. Curry Leaf - Small qty
14. Oil
15. Salt

Procedure :

1. In a pan, add half tbs of oil. Then add ginger-garlic paste. Fry till raw smell is gone.

2. Now, add the chopped onion and then chopped bell pepper. Fry till onion turns golden brown.

3. Now, add the tomato puree and 2 tsp of chilly powder, salt and garam masala. Mix well.

4. Allow the contents to boil well in medium flame, switch of the stove when the mixture turns thick.

5. In a vessel mix two flours, salt, 1 tsp chilly powder and water. Make it to a Bajji mix like consistency.

6. Heat oil and then dip each idl piece in the batter and put them in the oil.

7. Fry till they become crisp. Drain the extra oil in a kitchen tissue.

8. Now, add these fried idlies to the mixture in the pan.

9. Add soya sauce and mix well.

10. Finally, add the lemon juice and then garnish with coriander and curry leaf.

11. Serve hot.

my dear friend's favourite recipe! When we were studying in chennai, she used to travel 40 mins to tambaram, to have these fried idlis at vasantha bhavan. Thanks for sharing this Nithu, I will let her know about your recipe! She will be happy to see something similar to the restaurant one.

It looks very tempting and though I hate Idlis and have seen these Idlis at many blogs, yours inspires me to cook them rightaway. I will try this soon and will let you know!
