Yogurt Rice and A Product Review

Last week, I got these eco-friendly disposable plates from Marx Foods for doing a review. The first thing I noticed about the plates is their pretty perfect shape. They sent me hexagonal plates and round plates. I was taken by the pretty look of the plates. These elegant looking plates are made from naturally discarded sheaths of the leaves of the Adaka palm tree which are actually collected from the forest floor. These palm plates are really firm. Marx Foods sell plates at the cost of $33.50 for 25 pieces and $77.25 for 100 pieces. These pretty, firm, eco-friendly plates are best for any party.

When I first saw the round plates from Marx Foods, I was reminded of the thonnai (handmade cups made out of dried plantain leaves), which is used to serve prasadam like Sakkarai Pongal, Ven Pongal, Sundal and Yogurt Rice in temples. So, I decided to take pictures with one of these dishes. I prepared yogurt rice and here is the recipe for Yogurt rice.

Ingredients :

1. Rice - 1 Cup (Cooked)
2. Milk - 3/4 Cup (Boiled and cooled)
3. Butter - 1 tsp
4. Yogurt - 1/2 Cup
5. Mustard - 1 tsp
6. Ginger - 1/2 tsp (Grated)
7. Carrot - 1/4 Cup (Grated)
8. Green Chilly - 1 (Finely Chopped)
9. Salt - Needed Qty
10. Oil - 2 tsp
11. Curry Leaf - A few
12. Grapes/pomegranate - 1/2 Cup

Procedure :

1. Mash the rice with salt. Add butter and yogurt. Mix well.

2. Now, add milk, grated ginger and carrot. Mix completely.

3. In a pan, heat oil Splutter mustard. Then add curry leaves and green chillies. Fry for a second.

4. Add this to the rice.

5. Add fruits like pomegranate/ grapes.

6. Serve with pickle.

I kept the yogurt rice in the palm plates for more than 30 minutes and to my surprised, there was no leakage at all. I'm satisfied with the beautiful looking, leak proof palm plates. In another plate, I kept plantain fry/roast (will be posting the recipe soon) and I was able to reuse that plate with just wiping it off with damp kitchen towel. So, the plates/bowl from Mark foods can also be reused if dry dishes were served. Though, the cost of the plate may sound high, I personally felt, they are worth for the money paid.
